Bringing Taizé-style worship to New England

The worship space at the Taize Community in France.

April 03, 2018

Two Vermont churches have started regular Taizé-style worship services in the past few months, and we want to hear about yours.

Pastor Hannah K. Sotak at Rutland United Methodist Church , reports that she has launched a new Taizé-style service, called “Metal Meditations: Meditation inspired by Taizé, Music inspired by Rock, Metal, and Blues favorites.” The service is 7-8 a.m. every Tuesday.

Participants are invited to learn the practice Christian Meditation while soaking in the sounds of music inspired by metal and rock favorites. “It was a life-giving time of meditation,” she said of the first service on March 20, 2018.

First UMC in Burlington held its first monthly Taizé Prayer Service on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017. The service is held at 6:30 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month.

Pastor Rachel Fraumann wrote of the first service: “We had a team of people help imagine, design, and create our

liturgical space this week. ... I am delighted to bring a little bit of Taizé back to Burlington!”

Both Pastor Fraumann and Pastor Sotak have made the pilgrimage to the Taizé community in France led by Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar (hear Pastor Sotak’s reflection on the pilgrimage).

Bishop Devadhar has set a goal of creating nine new Taizé-style services – at least one in each district – across the Conference. The bishop has called Taizé worship the “church of the 22nd century.”

If you have a regular Taizé-style service, held at least monthly, we’d love to hear about it. Send information such as service time, when it began, community response, and your vision for its future to Rev. Rick McKinley, Conference Director of Congregational Development, at rickm@neumc.org.

Rev. McKinley also has resources for those who have recently begun or are interested in starting Taizé-style worship. Contact him for details.

Want to get a taste of Taizé? Rev. McKinley will be offering a short Taizé-style worship experience at the Rhode Island/SE MA District Resource Day on April 21, 2018. All are welcome. Click the link for details.
